While yesterday was a big day for all Desperate Housewives fans out there, some of us were mourning our dear Edie. But today got a little better when I ran into these never-seen-before pictures from last season.

NOT SO DESPERATE, NOW
Like the man-eater she plays in Desperate Housewives, actress Nicollette Sheridan is a force to be reckoned with. But, unlike Edie, she only has eyes for one man.

By the end of my meeting with Nicollette Sheridan we are swapping numbers for holistic vets, recipes for a cold cure and tips for emotional survival. She has been soft, empathic, nurturing. Not at all what I had expected. As Edie on Desperate Housewives she’s the bad girl, the manipulative, insatiable one, clad in tops revealing lots of cleavage, and shorts or skirts showing lots of leg. Whenever I’ve seen pictures of her, it’s usually been at awards ceremonies where she shimmers with hard-edged glamour.

Even her fianc?, singer Michael Bolton, implies that she is fierce, a force to be reckoned with and “absolutely fearless”. When I interviewed him a year ago, he told me that she loved to ski the black diamond run and that she liked nothing better than swimming with sharks, literally. When I mention this, Nicollette laughs softly. “That’s true. I have been scuba diving all over the world. When you snorkel you’re shark bait, but when you dive you’re one of them. It’s incredible. You feel like a fish. I feel absolutely safe and comfortable under the water.”

Today she’s wearing sweat pants and a white hoodie, hair scraped back in a pony tail. Her dog, golden retriever Oliver, is nuzzling her constantly, reminding her it’s soon time for a walk in the Hollywood Hills. She loves all animals and has a natural bond with them, is hyperintuitive.

She has been most famous for playing the uberbitches. She was Paige in Knots Landing until the series finished in 1993, and her career made a dramatic resurgence when she was cast in Desperate Housewives. She has always een impeccably glamorous – but insists she grew up a tomboy. “I spent my childhood climbing trees and playing with my cousins – all boys. One cousin built a tree house which was boys only, but that wasn’t about to stop me. He caught me and pushed me out and I landed like a cat.”

Desperate Housewife Nicollette Sheridan is paid millions to eat men for a living – but has finally found true love. And it all started with a very unlikely childhood friendship.

Before entering Nicollette Sheridan’s trailer on the set of Desperate Housewives, I’m requested by her publicist to remove my shoes on account of the cream carpets. “And you can remove your clothes too,” adds Nicollette, deadpanning so convincingly, I almost break into a nervous sweat. For a second it feels as though I’ve unwittingly wandered into an alternative Wisteria Lane where Nicollette’s alter ego, man-eating Edie Britt, has decided to bat for the other team. But of course, Nicollette’s just teasing. “It’s that British sense of humour, you know,” she says, suddenly adopting a haught British accent and then collapsing into giggles.

After a career playing impossibly glamorous, sexually carnivorous vamps (remember Paige Matheson on the soap opera Knots Landing?), it’s something of a surprise meeting the Nicollette Sheridan who resides underneath them. While on Desperate Housewives her character tends to be hard-nosed and brittle, in person, Nicollette is friendly, warm, quick to laugh and, dare one say it, terribly British. Her trailer is certainly decked out like an English cottage and her accent straddles both sides of the Atlantic, the result of being born in West Sussex and spending her childhood being ferried between the US and England. “But I do consider myself British, of course I do,” she says.

Having lived in London during her formative years, one of her childhood friends was the young Bonnie Langford. “I went to the Arts Educational drama school in London and ballet was my passion,” she says. “Bonnie was my friend and my competitor. She was older than me and I looked up to her.”

Remember the 2010 wall calendar goes on sale tomorrow and the Season 5 DVD boxset will do on September 1st.

After being MIA for about 2 months, Nic was seen again last night in Los Angeles where she attended the Jesse Garza & Joe Lupo Book Signing For “Life In Color” at Decades Two.

At the event, stylists Joe Lupo and Jesse Garza were helping colorphobes take that first small step and gave one-on-one color consultations using the shop’s
vintage collection as a teaching tool. They also signed copies
of their new book, Life in Color, which kind of sounds like a take on ’80s classic Color Me Beautiful but with American Apparel and Rihanna references.
