NICOLLETTE SHERIDAN AND NICKLAS SODERBLOM MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR ROMANTIC BREAK
OK! joins the Desperate Housewives star and her fiance on a romantic holiday in French Polynesia.
By Claire Isaac

The Pacific Ocean island of Bora Bora is the home of romance. And the Pearl Resorts, just off the coast of Bora Bora, are so romantic it seems a crime to be there without someone special. So it’s just as well Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan had her fiance Nicklas Soderblom? with her as they celebrated his 40th birthday on holiday there. The pair looked beaitufully relaxed throughout their trip, and who wouldn’t in this paradise, or at Le Taha’a Private Island & Spa, an exclusive resort a short helicopter ride away?

You can’t blame them for needing a little time out. Nicklas, a Swedish actor and stunman, is in big demand, and 41-year-old Nicollette’s role as Edie on Desperate Housewives is all-consuming, with filming, interviews and photo-shoots filling her days. Nicollette knows only too well the life of an actress on a hit TV series – after all, she spent seven years playing Paige on Knots Landing. In the past year, she’s been nominated for a Golden Globe, collected a Screen Actors Guild Award and been voted worst-dressed celebrity of 2004 in the States because of a risky choice made at the American Music Awards. Nicollette tells OK! Magazine with a laugh: “I’d rather be number one on the worst-dressed list than number two on the best-dressed list!”

nicCongratulations on your engagement, Nicollette. Tell us how you and Nicklas met…
We met in Malibu. Nicklas was on a surfboard and there was a huge great white shark that had come over from Catalina. I was doing my daily three-mile swim and I saw this fin and I swam as fast as I could and punched that shark right in the nose, repeatedly. And saved him [laughs]! Honestly!

Wow! And your ring is amazing…
Nicklas told me it took a really long time to find the right one. He’s a perfectionist!

How do you feel about this perfectionist man, Nicollette?
The most important thin in life is to love and be loved. One’s career doesn’t wrap its loving arms around you at night and I feel so lucky to have such a kind, compassionate and amazing man in my life.

Thanks for letting us come on holiday with you. Have you been to French Polynesia before?
No, neither of us has so we thought it would be a great place to come and get away. Little did we know that OK! Magazine would be involved! But it’s okay, we like you!

Are you a good traveller?
I am good. I really didn’t bring that much – I mean, what do you need? A few bikinis, a couple of wraps, pick up some Tahitian pearls along the way and you’re good to go.

What’s the best part of being able to escape to Bora Bora?
It’s a secret paradise. The water is stunning shades of blue and green and it’s so tranquil and healing. I was in great need of some downtime, some healthy delicious food and a lot of laughs… not to mention of couple of pina coladas!

Your workload must be pretty intense these days, especially since Desperate Housewives has become so huge…
Yes! This was extremely needed. Participating in every aspect to launch a show of this magnitude is a lot of work.

Did you expect the show to be this popular?
I don’t think anyone expected this. I was on a successful show for many years, but not from the inception, and I think it’s a different beast now. This was a hit before it even aired, which was bizarre.

Since the show began, you’ve had a lot of press attention. Do you ever feel threatened by the paparazzi?
It can be frightening when all of a sudden you catch yourself in a car chase and you try to get awat from them and they’re driving like idiots, going through red lights – and they’re really being a danger, not only to me, but other people on the road. It’s frightening what people will do for a buck.

You also experienced massive success in Knots Landing, which was a huge part of your life. How do you view that time now?
I grew up on that show . Paige and I both did. She started off as the vixen and ended up as the heroine. She was a role model. Women related to her, they wanted to be like her. She was strong, she was smart, she ran a company, she looked great – she set the bar.

And she got around a bit. Looking on the Internet at her history, there was quite a list of men…
Oh come on, that was seven years ago. Give her a break!

It must have been fun to play a character who was so strong…
Yes, and breakable. I made her real.

Was it sad to finish?
When things come to an end it is sad, but it’s also a new beginning. It was exciting to move on with my career. I did a lot of features when I finished the show, and that was nice – being able to play different characters with interesting arcs that had a beginning, middle and end. I have an eclectic range of work. I also made a lot of television movies that were character-driven pieces.

nicolletteLet’s talk about Edie, your character in Desperate Housewives. Do you like her as a person?
I love her, I think she’s fabulous. She’s definitely my favourite. She’s forthright and outspoken and fearless. She will take on any situation and call it as she sees it. And she’s the most honest one of the bunch: we have lying, we have drugs, we have cheating, we have all sorts of deceit – and we have Edie.

Did you have to autition for the part?
They wanted me to audition for the role of Bree, which I did, but I couldn’t stand the thought of playing that character for seven years. I just had this inkling the show was going to be successful, so therefore when I went in to read, natureally, I did an outstanding job! But my clothes spoke more of Edie than of Bree. I had a low-cut Chloe vest on underneath a beautiful Chloe suit – it wasn’t very Bree-like. It was sort of a subconcious thing, I think.

She’s an integral part of the show, but she’s a law unto herself, isn’t she?
She’s in a league of her own. She’ll always be an outsider, she’ll never be one of them, but she stands strong in her own right. She’s a breath of fresh air, she’s bright, witty and sexy… that’s the fun of it.

Do you enjoy working with Teri Hatcher?
Teri’s great – she takes it on the chin. Edie gives it to her constantly! After a scene I’ll just put my arms around her and give her a big hug and say: “I’m sorry, you know I love you!”

It must be difficult to deal with the rumours about bad feeling on the show…
People love controversy and so they make up as much as they can.

So there’s no truth?
Hmmm… Everybody is really appreciative of being part of this incredible show and this amazing ride and everybody gets along really well, regardless of what people say.

They say 40 is the new 30. How have you changed since you were 30?
Hopefully, I’m wiser! I feel centered, happy and have the capacity to achieve a lot more.

What do you do to relax?
I hike in the mountains with my dogs and play with them on the beach. Spending time with horses is like a meditation to me. I love grooming and bathing them, mucking out their stalls, watching them graze. I love the quality of life that comes with getting your hands dirty and being blessed with the company of my furry friends.
