How can you make a TV movie in three weeks?

By working very long days.

“To shoot a movie in 15 days, that’s just off the charts,” said Nicollette Sheridan during a break late Thursday from “The Christmas Spirit.” It premieres in six weeks, at 8 p.m. Dec. 1, on the Hallmark Channel.

“We’re shooting nine pages (of script) a day. That is record time. It really puts pressure on everyone, including the editing and laying in the music,” said Sheridan while relaxing in her trailer with Oliver, her golden retriever also in the film.

The three-week shoot ended late Friday – or early Saturday – inside a Mechanic Street home. Most of the movie about the journalist’s ghost (Sheridan) trying to stop a developer (Bart Johnson, “High School Musical”) from ruining her picturesque hometown was filmed in or near the Warren County seat.

nicollette sheridan the christmas spirit“We’ve been so welcomed by everybody here, especially on the side street with the houses where we’ve been shooting until 3 in the morning,” she said.

Why wait until two months before December? “The Christmas Spirit” has “happened quite quickly” since she pitched the concept last December to the Hallmark Channel, said the former “Desperate Housewives” and “Knots Landing” star.

Sheridan, also an executive producer, hooked up in January with the Motion Picture Corporation of America (“Dumb and Dumber,” “Christmas at Castlebury Hall,” “Beverly Hills Ninja”) and director Jack Angelo, who wrote the script. They didn’t start searching for locations until August.

“The Christmas Spirit” landed in Lebanon, thanks to photos and a tour by Kristen Erwin Scholtman, Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky Film Commission executive director.

“When I saw the pictures (from various locations), this one was my favorite,” she said. “After Jack arrived here, he told me he found everything he needed in this wonderful town of Lebanon. It really is as I imagined it would be.”

The local crew, cast and extras were “wonderful,” she said. “The shop owners actually put up their own Christmas decorations for us. Everything just fell in place. There is something magical in the air here.”

Scholtman also provided the star with weekend diversions from her exhausting movie schedule. She attended the Bengals-Patriots game, rode motorcycles around Indian Hill and toured the haunted Dent Schoolhouse.

Sheridan, who stayed at a Downtown hotel, jogged with Oliver in the mornings or “late at night, and we felt safe anywhere we went.” She also enjoyed eating at Boca, Sotto and the Golden Lamb.

The national TV audience for “The Christmas Spirit” will see many Mulberry Street and Broadway businesses, Berry Intermediate School, the old Warren County Courthouse and several homes – as the New England town of Laurel Springs.

“You should see the outside of the Golden Lamb,” said said, “but I believe they changed the name.”

Filming has begun on Nicollette’s new movie for Hallmark Channel.

Behind The Scenes

As soon as actress Nicollette Sheridan arrived for her first scene Thursday, the sun broke through rain clouds which had soaked downtown Lebanon all morning.

“It’s the Christmas spirit!” she told director Jack Angelo.

That’s also the name of her Hallmark Channel movie to premiere on Sunday, Dec. 1.

The former “Desperate Housewives” star shot her first outdoor scene for “The Christmas Spirit” here on Mulberry Street, a block away from the Golden Lamb, after set designers had worked all morning in a downpour putting cotton along buildings for fake snow.

Street lamps were decorated with lighted wreaths and red banners with green Christmas trees reading “Holiday Greetings.”

“The city put the wreaths up for us. They’ve been great,” said producer Brad Southwick. Movie staffers also picked all the leaves off trees on the north side of Mulberry to make it look like winter.

Down the street, Halloween items were hidden inside the Jam and Jelly Lady shop by owner Sonya Staffan, when she put a Christmas tree in the front window.

“It’s fun to watch them,” said Staffan about the three dozen crew members who descended on downtown Monday. She remembers watching the filming of “Harper Valley PTA” here in 1977 with Barbara Eden, and Melanie Griffith’s “Milk Money” in 1993.

“But I never thought I’d be in one. I was shocked when they called me a few days ago and asked if I’d audition – in my own store — for the role of the Jam Lady,” Staffan said.

She got the part, and was filmed sweeping the sidewalk in front of her business between cloud bursts Thursday.

The homemade jelly store was the type of small town business which drew the Hallmark movie to the picturesque Warren County seat, said executive producer Alex Coscas.

“The Jam and Jelly Lady is a perfect example of the kind of town we wanted, where everyone knows everybody. Lebanon has a very homey feel to the movie world,” Coscas said.

Producers toured Lebanon Labor Day weekend with Kristen Erwin Schlotman, executive director of the Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky Film Commission.

“This was the first place she brought us to, and it was perfect,” Coscas said.

“The Christmas Spirit” began filming Monday with Sheridan at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati. Diner scenes were shot Wednesday at the Country Kitchen restaurant near the Interstate 71 interchange with Ohio 123, east of town. Production wraps Oct. 18.

Sheridan plays journalist Charlotte Hart, who returns to her small hometown for the holidays and discovers that a greedy real estate developer (Bart Johnson, “High School Musical”) wants to buy out downtown shop owners and modernize the town.

During her visit, Hart is injured in a car crash which leaves her body in a coma, “but her spirit is very much awake,” according to Hallmark. So as a ghost, she tries to thwart the developer.

The morning rain didn’t detract from the first Lebanon scene. The wet brick sidewalk made it look like the ice-melt had done its job, Southwick said.

After shooting five takes, production assistants rolled up the cotton and shoved it into black trash bags while cameras were moved into the LCNB Bank a few doors away at Mulberry Street and Broadway for the next scene.

Movie magic truly comes to town next week when “snow men” from Wisconsin bring in machines to make Mulberry Street look like winter in October, Southwick said.

“We’ve brought in some people from Wisconsin, because we know they know snow. It will be a mix of artificial snow and shave ice,” Coscas said. “But on film, it will look like wintertime in Lebanon. It will look beautiful.”

Nicollette Sheridan (“Desperate Housewives”), Oscar-winner Olympia Dukakis (“Moonstruck”) and Bart Johnson (Coach Bolton the “High School Musical” films) will star in a Hallmark Channel movie channel filming in Lebanon, Ohio.

Production starts next week on “The Christmas Spirit,” said George Zaralidis, Hallmark Channel spokesman. “The Christmas Spirit” was one of nine new original Christmas productions announced by the Hallmark Channel.

Actors, producers and director Jack Angelo, who also wrote the script, will be on a tight schedule. “The Christmas Spirit” will premiere in 10 weeks — at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1 – the Hallmark Channel announced today.

Charlotte Hart (Sheridan), a distinguished journalist, is spending time with her family over the holidays when a real estate developer approaches their small town with quite an offer.
Skeptical and looking for the real scoop, Charlotte drives to see the real estate head honcho to question him. While she’s en route, she gets into a terrible car accident and wakes up in the hospital only to realize that her body is in a coma, but her spirit is very much awake. She meets another spirit, who just happens to be the greedy developer. It turns out that he was on the other end of the accident, and he too is in a coma. With only a few days left before the town votes on the development, Charlotte must try to change the minds of the developer and the town, but that is no easy task when no one can see or hear her.

“The Christmas Spirit” is a Brad Krevoy Television production. Brad Krevoy, Nicollette Sheridan, Francisco Gonzalez, Alexandre Coscas, Eric Jarboe and James Townsend are executive producers. Brad Southwick is a producer.
